The reviews page has been keeping an eye on the closures since March. Businesses can update their status to temporarily or permanently closed on Yelp.
As of August 31, nearly 163,700 companies on Yelp have closed since March 1, the company said, marking a 23% increase from July 10. Of those, about 98,000 say they have closed their doors for good.
Of all closed businesses, about 32,100 are restaurants, and close to 19,600 or approx. 61% have closed permanently.
According to Yelp, some eateries have performed better than others: Pizzerias, delicatessens, food trucks, bakeries and coffee shops have overall done better than Mexican restaurants, breakfast and brunch, burger or sandwich shops or eateries that focus on dessert.
Restaurant groups have warned that many eateries will not survive the blow that the pandemic delivered.
This week, the National Restaurant Association said 100,000 restaurants have closed either permanently or long-term, adding that the sector is on the verge of losing $ 240 billion in sales this year.
A number of factors have made it particularly difficult for restaurants that tend to operate on razor-sharp margins, even in the best of times, to cope with the disruption.
Retail operators are also struggling. About 30,400 shopping and retail businesses on Yelp have closed since March 1, approx. 17,500 or 58% of them permanently. And the cities are particularly affected, according to the data. Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and Miami have all seen a particularly large number of companies permanently stop working.
