A measles outbreak is spread across a Washington county known for choosing not to vaccinate its children, and health officials have declared a public health emergency.

At least 18 additional locations where people may have been exposed to measles were identified Saturday in Oakland County, according to the county's Health Division.

On Thursday, the division had released a list of more than 25 locations of exposure between March 14-20. The additional sites push the exposure timeline to March 21.

There have been at least five confirmed cases of the highly contagious disease and three other suspected cases under investigation. Health officials said a traveler from Israel, who was infected, may have spread the virus while visiting Oakland County from March 6-13.

"Unvaccinated individuals need to get vaccinated. a record of two measles (MMR) vaccines, unsure if you have been vaccinated, or unsure if you have had measles in the past, contact your healthcare provider, ”said Leigh-Anne Stafford, health officer for Oakland County, in a news release

People are urged to watch for symptoms 21 days after potential exposure Symptoms include:

  • High fever (may over 104 degrees Fahrenheit)
  • Cough
  • Runny nose
  • Red, watery eyes (conjunctivitis)
  • Tiny white spots on the inner cheeks, gums, and roo f of the mouth (Copy Spots) two to three days after symptoms start
  • A rash that is red, raised, blotchy; usually starts on face, spreads to trunk, arms, and legs 3-5 days after symptoms start

Anyone who visited the locations during the times and dates can receive vaccination by Sunday.
