Amazon has closed a $ 13 million deal for "Late Night", a buzzy comedy about diversity in a sennat talk show writer space written by, produced, and stars Mindy Kaling. It's the first big sale out of the Sundance Film Festival.
"Late Night" co-star Emma Thompson as a stinging cartoon reluctantly taking an American-American writer (Kaling) under her wing after being ashamed to hire more women and minorities. In a cover story for Variety Kaling said she saw "Late Night" as a chance to tell a well-known story about someone trying to break into the entertainment industry from a new perspective.
"So much of this movie is about being a fan and being outside the entertainment industry," Kaling told Variety . "This story has been told many, many, many times by 52-year-old white men, and I love all those movies. And as a comedian, I have always identified them because it was the closest I could identify with. There was no one Like me making these kind of movies. "
The film also hits the ground when the studios are being pushed to back more projects from women and people of color, making it particularly timely.
"Late Night" was originally created on Fox 2000 with Paul Feig slated to lead the comedy. But Kaling's pregnancy and a disease in Thompson's family resulted in the start date being squeezed. When the cameras were finally ready to roll, the Feig Blake made the Lively thriller "A Simple Favor" and Fox 2000 went on. Instead, Kaling launched independent funding and dropped Nisha Ganatra ("Chutney Popcorn") directly. Ganatra impressed Kaling with his personal connection to the material.
"I knew all about the power to keep the door open behind you instead of slamming it and closing and saying," Thank you, I came in, "she said Variety to the latest" Late Night "Overview.
The sale is a statement maker for Amazon, who has not been active in recent movie markets, and has preferred to produce his own films rather than relying heavily on acquisitions, but it also has a commercial zip for it. That left some audience members at the film's premiere on Friday comparing it to "The Big Sick", another indie comedy that Amazon bought out of Sundance. The Streamer would be thrilled if "Late Night" had similar commercial results. The Big Sick "went up to gross $ 56.4 million globally when it hit theaters in 2017.
" Late Night "co-star John Lithgow, Amy Ryan and Ike Barinholtz.
The Charter is for North American rights. the sale with Amazon.
