Netflix has commissioned a third season of drug-dealing drama series Narcos: Mexico. When it returns, it will be without league leader Diego Luna, who portrayed drug cartel leader Félix Gallardo, and with a new showrunner.
Season 2 ended with Lunas Gallardo sentenced to prison for his drug dealing and there had been much speculation that he would not return if the series was renewed for a third season. Luna is ready to play her Cassian Andor character in Disney +’s Star wars the spinoff series Rogue one, which is currently in pre-production.
Series co-creator Carlo Bernard takes over the daily duties from Eric Newman, who is retiring after five seasons. Newman will continue to produce the series with Bernard, Jose Padilha, Sidonie Dumas, Christophe Riandee, Nicolas Atlan, Eugene Stein, Alexandra Hunter, Katie O̵
WME signs ‘Narcos’ star Wagner Moura
Newman is currently under a joint deal with Netflix on both feature pages (Bright, Power Project) and TV page (Hemlock Grove, Narcos and Narcos: Mexico). He will consider overseeing an expanding Netflix slate that includes the previously announced opioid TV drama Painkiller, escape from spiderhead starring Chris Hemsworth and Miles Teller The upper world with Daniel Kaluuya in the lead role.

Set in the 90s, when the globalization of the drug business ignites, season 3 examines the war that breaks out after Felix’s empire splinters. While newly independent cartels are struggling to survive political upheaval and escalating violence, a new generation of Mexican kingpins is emerging. But in this war, the truth is the first casualty – and any arrest, murder and demolition only pushes real victory further away.
Starring Scoot McNairy, José Maria Yazpik, Alberto Ammann, Alfonso Dosal, Mayra Hermosillo, Matt Letscher, Manuel Masalva, Alejandro Edda and Gorka Lasaosa all return for the third season.
In addition to Moura, Andrés Baiz, Alejandra Marquez, Luis Ortega, Amat Escalante will direct on season 3.
Season 2, which premiered in February, is currently streaming on Netflix.
