Large numbers of Lyme-bearing ticks are found near beaches

A new study showed that disease-controlled ticks typically found in wooded areas also inhabit near beaches in northern California.

The study was published last Friday in the journal Applied and environmental biology found an abundance of ticks in the brush next to the beaches that people tend to walk through to reach the sand.

“We looked at coastal scrubber and looked at redwood forests and oak forests and that sort of thing, because everyone tends to look at the same kind of places. And we found ticks pretty much everywhere we looked, ”Daniel Salkeld, a researcher at Colorado State University who led The study, told The Washington Post.

The very fact that these infectious ticks are usually thought to be associated with wooded areas underscores to the unknown surroundings how widespread they are.

Lyme disease, a well-known disease associated with ticks, is the product of being bitten by an infected black-legged tick. Although difficult to diagnose, Center for Disease Control and Prevention It is estimated that about 480,000 people are infected with Lyme disease each year.

Finding ticks in these coastal areas was particularly surprising because western gray squirrels, the usual “source of infection for rafts, do not typically live in these areas.

The study did not determine which animal caused the infectious ticks in these coastal areas, and Said Salkeld Ecologists will have to research more to find the cause.

To best avoid getting infected by a tick, after walking through wooded or beach paths, people should remove all the clothing they were wearing and throw them in a hot dryer for 20 minutes to kill any ticks. People then need to check their bodies for ticks, which tend to be found on the head, back of the ears, forearms, groin and behind the knees.

“I̵

7;m not trying to ruin anyone’s vacation or outdoor time,” Said Salkeld. “… Just pay attention and get rid of them as soon as possible.”
