Quantum computing expert Andrew Fursman is convinced that quantum attacks in the future will pose a threat to the security of Bitcoin (BTC).
In a video, Fursman highlights that the enormous computational potential of quantum machines could be able to compromise Bitcoin security.
“It is mathematically proven that if you have a device similar to the kind of quantum computers that people want to build, then you will be able to decrypt this information significantly better than could ever be possible with classical devices.”
Fursman argues that no matter when quantum computers grow up, a solution must be found.
“Whether quantum computers come out tomorrow or in five years or in ten years, they are capable of being cryptographically useful. These devices will be able to do something that you might not want if you are someone who keeps a secret …
While Fursman says quantum machines could put Bitcoin’s cryptography at risk, he notes it will not happen anytime soon.
“We may need significantly more qubits (quantum bits or a unit with quantum information) than are currently available. And as I kind of hinted, we may be at the point where the biggest computers we build today end up being the foundation of a logical qubit for one of these big devices …
So if we need a thousand times more qubits, then we may have in a few years, you will have to think about the growth of these things both from the error correction point of view and the number of logical qubits that you need to go forward …
And I should say that some people even set the number as high as millions that you may need. So we certainly are, we are not just around the corner from this. That will not happen next week. ”
