New York rocket rapper A $ AP Rocky was arrested in Stockholm, Sweden after being charged with attacks earlier this week. The rapper producer was in the country to perform at the two-day Smash x Stadium hip-hop music festival when the incident took place.
Born Rakim Myers, he and some members of his affiliation were filmed in a physical battle on the street. The BBC reports that the police arrested him for aggravated assault, and he is currently still in Sweden. Three others were arrested with him. There are reports that he could stand up to six years in prison for the offense, could things really go in that direction?
How altercation began
Conflicting stories lie in the root of the case, with A $ AP Rocky
release two sets of his own video footage of skirmish to prove he was
provoked. It shows some men after him and his crew as they go down a
Stockholm street. They repeatedly asked the strangers to move away from them,
and one of the men continued to challenge the rap security guard. This goes on to
some time before any fight began.
In the caption, A $ AP Rocky wrote that the boys were drug addicts who also physically harassed women who passed by. According to his speech, he told them that they didn't want any trouble or to go to jail, but the harassment went on to blocks. At one point, one of the guys hit a bodyguard with a set of headphones, but the guard blocked the hits and tried to walk away. Then the man accused the bodyguard of breaking his headphones.
Once upon a time, there was a fight between A $ AP Rocky and the men who were captured on film by a spectator and submitted by TMZ. At one point he threw one of the men, and after the battle was over, the rapper and his fellow men left the scene. According to the Complex, this whole thing might have started from an argument in a restaurant.
Possible consequences for the rapper
News reported that the alteration took place on Sunday and A $ AP Rocky turned
even on Wednesday to Swedish authorities. He and the others involved were
formally arrested and charged. The BBC noted that Swedish prosecutors have come up
for three days to decide how to proceed with the case, but complex
reported that they have asked a judge to keep him and the other suspects for two
weeks. They ask for more time so they can investigate the matter.
For criminal cases in Sweden, there are no juries, so it falls on prosecution or defense lawyer to prove their case. Swedish judges try to avoid giving prison sentences unless the crime is extreme, and the country offers conditional release, which allows prisoners to go free after earning 2/3 of their punishment. It is possible A $ AP Rocky will face a less serious penalty than six years if he is convicted of attack.
Until he moves through the Swedish legal system, the rapper is
is expected to miss his performance plan in the coming weeks, which
included a show in Oslo, Norway last Wednesday. Prosecutors are expected
to have an update of the case by the end of the week or early next week.
