EAST MOLINE, Ill. (KWQC) – UPDATE 5/26/2019 12:37 pm ..: Illinois State Police has released the name of a man shot by the police after a traffic jam.
According to a press release, state police Darold Strunk, 25, was a passenger in a vehicle that police tried to stop for a traffic crime. The female driver refused to stop when another East Moline officer pulled in front of the vehicle near 7th Street and 40th Avenue. Illinois State Police say Strunk got out of the car and showed a gun in "aggressive way" and fired his gun on one of the squad cars. Two Eastern Moline police came back when Strunk ran into a residential area with his gun.
During the investigation, detectives were able to get dash cam video and witness cell phone video of the incident.
Strunk was hit by the officer's lap fire and was taken to the hospital for life-threatening injuries. He is currently being treated in a hospital.
Rock Island County State Attorney has approved charges for aggravated discharge of a firearm against Strunk. More taxes are expected.
The names of the officers involved have not been released. Neither officer was injured. They are placed on paid paid leave per year. Department policy.
The police are asking the public to avoid 7th Ave. North of the Avenue of the Cities for the overnight hours while continuing to investigate and talk with witnesses, but they say there is no public danger at this time.
At a press conference, officials stopped at a traffic jam that two police officers exchanged shots with the passengers. A 25-year-old male suspicion was taken into custody and treated in a hospital for a shot on wounds.
Police say the suspect's firearm was restored on stage. There is no word yet because of the shooting.
Moline Police Department, Rock Island County Sheriff's Department, Silvis Police, Hampton Police and Illinois State Police responded.
The study has been transferred to the Integrity Task Force. None of East Moline's investigators will be involved. The Eastmoline police say they do not have body cameras, but their cars have car videos that the task force will have access to.
The police are asking everyone with information, pictures or video related to this shooting to contact Special Unit.
