Indian origin London's mayoral candidate fell over anti-Semitic remarks

An entrepreneurial activist of Indian descent was dropped as a potential mayoral candidate in London.

London:

An entrepreneurial activist of Indian descent was rejected on Monday as a potential mayoral candidate in London to fight Sadiq Khan next year, following her earlier anti-Semitic comments.

Geeta Sidhu Robb, the founder of the company Nosh Detox with organic food and juice products, had been listed as the Liberal Democratic candidate to take on Labor̵

7;s Khan, but was instead suspended from the party after a recording from the 1997 general election revealed her with anti-Jewish remarks.

“I sincerely apologize for my actions in the 1997 election campaign. My behavior caused insult and hurt and I am deeply saddened,” Sidhu Robb said.

“There is no room for any kind of racism or anti-Semitism in society, and as such I very much regret my behavior at the time. It is by no means an excuse, but the context was that I was on the receiving end of a consistent racist campaign and, erroneously, retaliated like I did, ”she said.

As a candidate in the general election for the Conservative Party in Blackburn 23 years ago, when she was fighting incumbent Labor MP Jack Straw, Sidhu Robb was filmed saying, “Do not vote for a Jew, Jack Straw is a Jew.”

The London-based health food promoter, who came second behind Straw in that election, said she was “deeply ashamed” of the language she had used, which she is seen admitting in the footage was done in anger.

“As the footage shows, I immediately regretted my appalling behavior, which I continue to do. And I actively reach out to the Jewish community to listen and learn,” she said.

“Two wrongs never make a right. I made a mistake and I take responsibility for my heinous acts 23 years ago, they were never repeated. I urge you to judge me for who I am today, a champion who is committed to eradicating inequality and discrimination in all its forms, ”she added in a lengthy Twitter statement.

The election of the mayor of London was to be held in May this year, but has been postponed until May 2021 due to the coronavirus lockout disorder.

So far, incumbent Sadiq Khan is being challenged by Conservative Party candidate Shaun Bailey in the race. The election of Lib Dem has proved difficult as the party’s previous election, Siobhan Benita, withdrew from the race, saying she could not commit to an extra year of unpaid campaign. The party is now back looking for a potential candidate after Sidhu Robb’s suspension.

“Geeta Sidhu Robb has been suspended from the Liberal Democrats and will not be on the ballot to be the Liberal Democratic candidate for mayor of London. An investigation is underway in accordance with due process,” a Lib Dem spokesman said.
