Illinois College shoots suspicion of surrender in Chicago, school says



An Illinois student accused of shooting his roommate during a dispute surrendered to Chicago authorities, the university said Wednesday.

Kavion Poplous, 18, is accused of shooting his roommate in Thompson Hall on the Western Illinois University campus around 6 p.m. 22.30 Tuesday. The school said on its Facebook page that Poplous was taken into custody by the FBI on Wednesday afternoon.

An arrest warrant was issued for his arrest on charges of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery and aggravated firearm discharge.

“I would like to thank the prompt work of our Public Security Office and other law enforcement personnel and first responders for the assistance they provided,” said University President Martin Abraham. “I would also like to thank law enforcement as well as our student service staff and so many others who worked quickly to ensure the safety of our students. Our thoughts are with our students who remain hospitalized and we ask for a speedy recovery.”

Poplous, a first-year student at the University of Macomb, Illinois, fled after the shooting. The victim, who has not been identified publicly, was taken to a hospital and underwent surgery. His condition was not known, the school said.

As a precautionary measure, all campus buildings and living quarters were locked on Wednesday and all personal and online classes were canceled. The university will resume regular operations on Thursday.

It was not clear what led to the shooting. University spokeswoman Darcie Shinberger told WIFR-TV that the shooting took place in a dorm room. Investigators are trying to determine a motive.
