You may have already noticed that you spend more on filling your car’s tank.
Do not be surprised if the price continues to tick higher.
The national average cost of a gallon of gas has increased by approx. 18 cents over the past two weeks on the heels of reduced oil refining capacity during extreme cold in Texas, according to GasBuddy. Now a major contributor will increase demand amid lower oil production and higher crude oil prices ̵

The current national average for a liter of plain lead-free is $ 2.74. That’s $ 1 more than $ 1.74 that was counted in April 2020, when the pandemic first took hold and demand crashed, GasBuddy data shows. States with the lowest average prices include Mississippi ($ 2.35), Louisiana ($ 2.37) and Texas ($ 2.39), while those with the highest averages are California $ (3.67), Hawaii ($ 3, 41) and Washington ($ 3.08).
The costs per Gallons also tend to increase in the spring as demand increases and stations switch to cleaner and more environmentally friendly gas for the summer.
There are ways to save money on gas – in addition to things like sticking to the speed limit and avoiding aggressive driving – that can translate into hundreds of dollars a year.
First, shop around. Depending on where you live, there can be large price fluctuations between gas stations. And although the difference in price per. Gallon can only be a few cents, it still adds.
“Too many drivers just pull up to the nearest pump and end up paying too much,” said Patrick De Haan, head of oil analysis for GasBuddy.
There can also be sharp price differences from one state to the next. For example, a gas station in Arizona is $ 1 less than a competitor across California’s state line, De Haan said. (California’s tax per gallon is 82 cents and Arizona’s 37 cents.)
In addition, there are apps – including GasBuddy, Gas Guru and AAA TripTik – you can use to find the best prices along your route.
It is also worth examining loyalty programs that many large chains have. They are generally free and can offer discounts per. Gallon, said De Haan.
However, credit cards that offer discounts on gas purchases may not be the best option unless you routinely pay the card balance.
“If you do not pay your bill, you end up giving the bank more money than the rebate is worth,” De Haan said. “The cards work if you pay for it, but not if you carry the balance month to month.”
