Housemarque has suggested that it’s better to save on its PlayStation 5 exclusive Returnal.
Quote that tweeted a thread on Reddit titled “No need to be toxic to people who need save-options!”, Housemarque said: “We hear society and we love you all. Nothing to announce now, but keep playing and enjoy the challenge as much as you can! “
This is in response to roguelite Returnal’s inability to save and exit. You cannot save a race and return to it. If you stop during a race, the race is lost. You can use the PS5’s sleep mode to suspend the game and return to where you left off later, but this is far from ideal.
Returnal has a checkpoint system, but it is not very useful. As Chris Tapsell wrote in his wonderful Returnal review:
“… checkpoints only work once per run, so be sure to spend half a day’s resources on one.”
As redditor AbUndMax explains in their thread:
“Busy people need to save!
“Players should not be able to choose between save files and save files should be deleted automatically as soon as you die so that the game roguelite character is not corrupted.”
Based on his tweet, Housemarque is looking at a solution to this problem. I imagine that its consideration will be how to preserve the essence of the game and its roguelite foundations, while at the same time providing a save and exit option for time-hungry players.
I leave you with this anecdote from Tapsell’s Returnal review that feels relevant:
“I had paused the game while I was on my best run ever, and came back two minutes later to find my lender PS5 in the middle of an automatic update. I lost all progress on the run, about an entire morning of my turn off auto-updates! “
