Life can sometimes be difficult for Honda Civic Type R owners. Of course, they are running the best sports compact currently on the market, but Type R's styling is so subtle, it just fits right in. There are bound to be people who value their status as a total sleeper, but after the fourth or fifth time they lose it in the parking lot, even they are forced to admit they want their car out a little. Fortunately, the people at Mugen have a solution.
The car you see here is called the RC20GT concept, and it is the latest version of a package that Mugen develops for Civic Type R. If you scroll through the images at the bottom you will notice that the styling has been refined since it was first shown at last year's Tokyo Auto Salon. Better still, it's not just an appearance package. In addition to offering better aerodynamics, the bumpers, the front leather spoiler, hood, side shields and wing are all made of carbon fiber to reduce weight.
The Mugen also gave the RC20GT an upgraded suspension, high performance brakes, a sports outlet with single outlet, new lightweight aluminum wheels and improved engine breathing. If you look closely, you will notice that the RC20GT also gets cooler LED taillights. Inside, there is a sports steering wheel, bucket seats with four-point braces, a card change switch and sporty new floor mats.
As this is technically a concept car, Mugen has not yet announced pricing. Odds are, it will be quite expensive with all carbon-fiber components and performance upgrades. But whatever it costs, it will probably be worthwhile to finally get the Civic Type R car always had the potential.
