H&M opens store in Des Moines metro



H&M will take over two stories and 25,000 square feet inside the Jordan Creek Town Center in West Des Moines next summer. Mall officials say that H&M has been one of the most in-demand stores, and they have been in negotiations with the Swedish clothing store for a long time. It was just a matter of finding enough space for them. Over at the Merle Hay Mall in Des Moines, owners told KCCI on Friday that they would demolish the old Sears building, which was part of the original mall built in 1959. The building has been empty since the company declared bankruptcy for almost two years since. Mall owner Elizabeth Holland says her team found asbestos in the building, meaning the demolition will take longer than expected. It cannot start until the Netherlands and Sears officially close the sale, which is expected to happen in November. Sears agreed to sell the building for $ 2.8 million, paid in part with a loan issued by Polk County for $ 2 million. The county agreed to add an additional $ 400,000 to the loans if the city of Des Moines matches it. “We have worked very hand in hand with those who all want to see the tax base in that part of Des Moines get better,”
