One in nine American men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point in their lives, but by adding some healthy prostate-friendly foods to your diet, you may be able to reduce your risk. According to the American Cancer Society, prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men, and it is believed that a fatty sugar-western diet can contribute to the increased rates of this disease.
While you should see your doctor for regular prostate cancer screening, you can start increasing your prostate health by adding these foods to your diet, according to Healthline:
- Tomatoes are at the top of the list because they contain a strong antioxidant called lycopene. A review of 1
- Broccoli contains many complex compounds, including a cancer phytochemically called sulforaphane, which selectively targets and kills cancer cells while leaving normal prostate cells healthy and unaffected. Experts say eating veggie cooked light or raw helps achieve the most benefits.
- Plant pods and soybeans. Foods such as beans, lentils and peanuts contain active plant compounds called phytoestrogens. Isoflavones are one of these phytoestrogens, and experts believe they contain potent anti-cancer properties. Research conducted by the National Cancer Institute shows a relationship between soybean and reduced levels of prostate-specific antigen or PSA. PSA is a protein produced by your prostate, and the PSA test measures the level of PSA in your blood to screen for cancer. Consider switching your regular burger to a bean burger or adopting carnal Mondays.
- pomegranate juice. Pomegranate juice is a rich source of antioxidants and has often been adorned as a "miracle" fruit to prevent chronic diseases related to oxidative stress and damage to our cells. Scientists believe that the strong antioxidants in this red fruit can "search and destroy" cancer cells while protecting healthy cells. Drink it clean or diluted with sparkling water for a tasty non-alcoholic cocktail.
- Fish. It is important to include many omega-3 fatty acids in your diet, balanced by some omega-6 fatty acids. The problem with the typical North American diet is that we eat too much omega-6 fatty acids. Omega-3 is found in fatty fish derived from cold water such as salmon, herring, mackerel, sardines and trout. Try to include at least three servings a week. Cod and flounder are also beneficial and have milder flavors which can be more palatable. And if the price is a factor, canned fish is much cheaper and can be just as healthy to fight prostate cancer as fresh fish from monger.
