Owners of some of the best Wear OS watches get a nice surprise thanks to the latest update to the Play Store.

According to a few threads on Reddit, some smartwatch models get a redesigned Play Store. Various elements of the Play Store app are much more distinctive with larger pill-shaped buttons to make it easier to navigate. This new design is found throughout the app, and some buttons even have a gradient color scheme.

The new design is very similar to Google and Samsung’s Wear OS platform, which the companies are developing together. Google unveiled some of the new overall platform on Google I / O, and Samsung recently unveiled its new One UI Watch platform at MWC 2021.

Play Store redesign seems to be available on select smartwatches at the moment, including Moto 360 (3rd generation), Suunto 7, Mobvoi TicWatch Pro 3 GPS and Fossil Gen 5, but availability may vary right now. Our TicWatch Pro 3 has not received the update, nor has the newer TicWatch E3, for that matter, but our Fossil Gen 5 has it.

The change only affects the Play Store app and does not appear in any other part of the user interface.

It’s unclear what got the update, but whatever it may be, it’s a curious change for Fossil Gen 5 after the company announced that its current devices were not updated to the new overall platform. It’s possible that older devices may still receive some items in the new Wear OS, but for now, Google remains pretty much the mother in terms of Wear OS updates. Whatever we have reached out to both Google and Fossil to clarify the updated look and be updated when we have more information.

The new overall platform is expected to arrive later this year with the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4, which will be the first smartwatch with the new Wear OS.
