ATLANTA (CBSDFW.COM/AP) – Gladys Knight shone brightly with her rendering of "The Star-Spangled Banner" at Super Bowl 53 in her hometown of Atlanta, Georgia.
"The Soul's Empress" Hit all the right notes in front of the big game between New England Patriots and the Los Angeles Rams.
Noise and controversy mentioned the 74-year-old performance when some have boycotted the NFL over treatment by Colin Kaepernick, the former quarterback who protested against racist injustice by kneeling under the national anthem . While some practitioners participated in the Super Bowl, Knight said she hoped her anthem would unite people.
At the end of her performance, the Air Force Thunderbirds rose above Mercedes-Benz Stadium to finish the pregame show.
Before Knight performed, R & B's sister harmonized the duo Chloe x Halle as a veteran girl group as they sang "America the Beautiful."
