Gio Urshela returned from an IL style injury due to bone spurs in his right elbow and had three hits in the Yankees’ 20-6 victory over the Blue Jays and was sharp on third.
“He sprayed the ball all over the ballpark,” Boone said. “It was good to see him come back like that and move like he did.”
Urshela’s return led to Miguel Andujar being elected to the alternative venue in Scranton.
“We wanted to keep Gleyber out one day and we felt we needed coverage in the middle of the pitch on the bench [Tuesday], ” Boone said about keeping Thairo Estrada on the list instead of the defensively limited Andujar.
After struggling for most of the season, Andujar had started producing at the plate, going 1
In addition to picking Andujar, the Yankees also sent Mike Ford down as they needed to make room for Urshela and Giancarlo Stanton.
Ford is hitless in 22 appearances this month with three walks. DJ LeMahieu can switch to first to back up Luke Voit.
The Yankees chose to jet both Andujar and Ford, while Erik Kratz was held as an extra catch.
“Our comfort level with three catchers – and not to risk losing one of these guys – there were some difficult decisions, especially [Andujar], ” Boone said. “With Gio and Stanton back and Aaron [Judge] then there were not many instant bats for him. ”
