Get live US election results delivered to your phone with our groundbreaking alarm | The Guardian

On the eve of the US election, Guardian offers readers a unique way to get live, up-to-date election results delivered to their mobile phones.

What is it?

When the results start coming in on Tuesday night, we will send a mobile alert that is automatically updated with the latest national data on the number of votes during the night. Without a tap, a search or the opening of an app, you can follow the poll and important developments live on your phone̵

7;s lock screen. (This is the screen of your phone when you are not actively using it.)

This alarm will be one of the fastest ways to receive election results on Tuesday and beyond. Since we do not know how long it will take to count the votes this year – whether it is hours, days or weeks – the election alarm will continue to count until the election is officially called, although you can minimize it at any time.

How do I sign up?

The alarm is available for free worldwide on both iOS and Android devices to anyone who downloads the Guardian mobile app.

If you are in USA: If you already have the app and are signed up to break news alerts in the US, you do not need to do anything – you will automatically receive the live election alert. However, if you need to download the app, or if you are not already signed up to receive notifications, you can follow these steps:

  • You can download the Guardian app from the iOS App Store on iPhones or the Google Play Store on Android phones by searching for “The Guardian”

  • If you already have the Guardian app, be sure to use the latest version

  • Go to Settings> Notifications in the Guardian app

  • Turn on ‘US Election 2020’ notifications

If you are outside the United States:

  • Download the Guardian app from the iOS App Store on iPhones or the Google Play Store on Android phones by searching for “The Guardian”

  • If you already have the Guardian app, be sure to use the latest version

  • Go to Settings> Notifications in the Guardian app

  • Turn on ‘US Election 2020’ notifications

What will I receive?

If you sign up, you will receive a single continuous update message that sits on your phone’s lock screen when the results come in on election night. The announcement shows the most up-to-date number of watered-down electoral and called states as well as an indication of which swing states have been called and the distribution of the popular vote between the two top candidates.

You will also be able to expand the alarm to see a data visualization showing the poll and options to push through to the Guardian liveblog or a full results page.

What if I decide I want to stop receiving notifications?

No problem. When the notification expands (drag down to expand notifications on Android, and either swipe sideways to tap “View” or hard tap to expand them on iOS) there will be buttons attached to the notification, including an option to deselect (to iOS) or Stop (on Android) notification. Tap it and you will unsubscribe.

Who created the alarm?

The project was developed in 2016 by the Guardians Mobile Innovation Lab, which was funded by the John S and James L Knight Foundation to study the delivery of news on small screens. The 2020 version was developed by the Guardian Apps team, which is part of our product and engineering department. It is fed live by data from the Associated Press, which has played a key role in assessing U.S. election results since 1848.
