Fincher's father, Jack Fincher, wrote the manuscript.
Gary Oldman and David Fincher work together to tell the story of Herman Mankiewicz, the newspaper scriptwriter, best known for collaborating with Orson Welles on Citizen Kane .
Mankiewicz's Mank nickname, created at Netflix with Fincher, makes it his next feature, with plans to shoot this fall. Oldman will portray the actress, who had a negligible influence in Hollywood's golden age.
Stay in the classic Hollywood vibe, the movie will be black and white.
Mank before cameras have been an over 20 year trip to the Fincher, who originally wanted to tackle the story after making his 1
Cean Chaffin, Fincher's longtime cohort, who has been working on the filmmakers' films since Game produces. Also produced is Doug Urbanski, nominated for an Oscar for The Darkest Hour .
Mankiewicz was a reporter and critic of the 1920s as well as a member of the New York City's famous literary club, the Algonquin Round Table. However, at the end of the 1920s, he was recruited by Paramount to come to Hollywood and work in the movie industry that turned into talkies. He even talked to journalists about joining the writers, famous for writing to Ben Hecht, "Millions must be captured here and your only competition is idiots."
Mankiewicz worked on many now classic films such as Wizard of Oz, Yankees Pride and Gentlemen prefer Blondes but it was Kane who caused controversy that caused him until his death. Both Mankiewicz and Welles worked on the manuscript, but Mankiewicz accused the filmmaker of trying to push him out of the limelight even though he said Welles offered to pay him in exchange for exclusive credit.
Mankiewicz's followers (like many who pricked Welles alienated as much as he attracted) cheered and chanted "Mank, Mank, Mank" when Kane won the Oscar for Best Original Manuscript with both receiving trophies (though none of them participated in the ceremony).
Mank becomes Fincher's first movie since 2014 Gone Girl. The filmmaker should have directed a successor to World War Z but budgetary problems sidelined this project. He is resumed by Donen Productions.
For Oldman, who plays the hard drink, matches Mankiewicz could represent another chance for an Oscar. The actor won for his depiction of Sir Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour . Oldman next stars in The Laundromat drama directed by Steven Soderbergh, also stars Meryl Streep. He resumed the APA.
