You never know how to develop.
It becomes increasingly difficult, if not impossible, to predict what works.
No one could have guessed back in the time when Epic Games was touting Fortnite as a PVE experience (which is now a less popular submode called "Save the World") that it would completely spin to fight royally and help define the entire genre along with PUBG . A former Epic Games director agrees.
Before Rod Fergusson became the current head of Gears of War the Coalition develops, he was the director of production at Epic. He spoke to Game Inform that he "would have canceled Fortnite " when it was in his rescue world incarnation if it were his call. Fergusson is "happy" for the game's success, but "when it was Save the World, it was a project that had some challenges … at that time, this game wouldn't pass my bar."
Considering the general weak answer to Save the World (and how it is almost never in the conversation when "Fornite" is mentioned), this makes a hell of a lot of sense.
