It’s an all-NFL “First Call” for Thursday morning with lots of Pittsburgh Steelers goodies.
At least one journalist believes Ben Roethlisberger will be back with the Steelers by the end of 2021. A well-known enemy from AFC North is looking for work. And an outlet believes it has found a landing spot for the Steelers running back James Conner.
Also a highly rated move prospect at cornerback feels good about his chances with the Steelers. And another NFL-free agent in that position finds a job before Steven Nelson.
Two more years! Two more years!
A popular topic on ESPN recently is the notion that the Steelers could draft Ben Roethlisberger̵
Or that the franchise holds out until next year to find a new start signal call.
It seems that NFL reporter John Clayton has not been in that camp with many from Bristol for a long time. He continued 93.7 from Wednesday. Clayton is convinced that “Big Ben” cannot be done at all after this season.
. @ JohnClaytonNFL on @ 937theFan on Steelers compiles a QB: “I think Ben Roethlisberger will play for 2 more years [2021 and 2022]. “
– Andrew Fillipponi (@ThePoniExpress) April 7, 2021
“I know he has a one-year contract,” Clayton said. “But it is not excluded that he could sign another year contract. I still think he will be there two years. But during this time you will maximize it and you will not be like Philadelphia (Jalen Hurts) or Green Bay (Jordan Love) where you take a quarterback and make him sit. ”
I’m not sure how I feel about any of these points. I still think Roethlisberger is finished after 2021. And I do not mind an apprentice sitting behind the starter if the situation is clear.
But Clayton put forward another argument that I think is perfect.
“With five quarterbacks in the first round, and most of them going pretty high, there is not one quarterback who you can say will be the next Ben Roethlisberger. Maybe (that player) can come in and be the next bricklayer Rudolph – plus being a better backup. But no, this is a draft where you just can not find that guy. You’ll have to wait for next year’s draft, ”Clayton said.
I draw there. I’d rather have the Steelers wait a year to acquire a quarterback than force an election in 2021. Wait until next year’s carousel begins to turn, and next year’s prospects fill the draft instead of forcing yourself to take Kellen Mond or Kyle Trask or Mac Jones just because you’re planning for 2022.
Elsewhere in “First Call” …
Nothing for Nelson: Another cornerback has a new concert and it’s not former Steeler Steven Nelson.
Good vibes from the Steelers ?: Florida State Cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. was on CBS Sports’ “All Things Covered” with former Steelers cornerback Bryant McFadden and current Vikings cornerback Patrick Peterson. And he said the Steelers, New York Jets and Cleveland Browns were the teams that gave him the best “vibe” during his Zoom meetings.
Go west young man?: An outlet believes the Arizona Cardinals could be a good landing spot for James Conner.
Goodbye Bengal: Longtime Cincinnati Bengals running back Gio Bernard has been released. Does anyone see a potential Mewelde Moore signing here for the Steelers? I do.
