Financial problems may begin earlier in dementia than many believe, the Duke study finds



The study, published in the Journal of Prevention of Alzheimer's Disease, is important because America's aging population is growing – and older adults have a disproportionate share of the nation's wealth. In the US, the study said older adults have $ 18 billion in assets. Poor judgment can make them easier targets for fraud. Most importantly, said P. Murali Doraiswamy, a Duke's professor of psychiatry and geriatrics and senior author of the paper, is the financial ability of a "core anchor" that allows people to live independently.
