On the corner of Uacceptable and Unacceptable, the Yankees lost a season-opening series to Orioles.
Baseball is not supposed to give automatic victories. But Orioles is so close to an NCAA tournament that 16th seed this sport provides. Maybe a game can slip away. But a series? In the Bronx? Towards a pitching staff who seemed allergic to throwing strikes? Towards a lineup more anonymous than an "American Idol" casting call?
Baltimore lost 115 games last year, and this roster makes it look like the good old days. The Yankees lost two out of three more than Orioles won, wasted the weekend in a wave of cruel situations that hit after a spring training filled with promises to change all or no ways.
This perspective is brought to you by the long season. Yankees 1
The expectation remains that the Yankees, Red Sox and Astros will win the top 95 this season.
Nevertheless, this was a disturbing weekend for the Yankees, culminating in a 7-5 tabs Sunday. Many of their leaders had spoken in the spring to establish a game tenor to carry them throughout the schedule. And Baltimore should have offered the same as a layup line to ignite this Yankees chart.
"Too early to hit the panic button, but of course we wanted to get out in different ways this first weekend," Brett Gardner said. "We are a much better team than we showed."
They staggered at every stage, but unmanageability by situationally beating resonates. For the Yankees noted that the last two champs, Houston and Boston, broke lots of homers while they were among the toughest lineups to knock out, and Yankees hitters talked about making harder outs up and down the lineup. They did not go on tour this first weekend – that's why, despite all the walks the Orioles pitchers wrote (22 in three games), the Yankees still lost twice.
"I think we did a good job this spring and I don't put much in these last three games, but we still have to do a better job," coach Marcus Thames says. "I know men have to cut back on their swings, which we talked about in spring training. When these situations come up, we must get it done."
They did not oppose Orioles. Yanks were 10-for-56 with runners in the series, including 6-for-29 (.207) with men in the scoring position. In the final, Yanks 2-to-12 with runners in scoring position with eight strikeouts – and whiffed 14 times in all.
During the first eight innings of a game delayed three hours, 17 minutes from the start With the rain, the Yankees counted a hit in 10 bat with whistles in scoring position. Aaron Judge appointed in two races in the fourth. But with the tie and drive, you run on base, followed by Giancarlo Stanton by knocking out at three places. And the judge knocked out in his other four baths. Gary Sanchez hit a solo homer, but was still the worst player in the game that struck out three times and committed a throwing error that led to a race for the second straight game.
With all the talk that the Yankees should have gone after Bryce Harper and Manny Machado, I wonder if I'm not acting for J.T. Realmuto because they continued to believe so much in Sanchez despite a decline in 2018 will prove more problematic.
Yankees signed DJ LeMahieu hoping he would help with peskier at-bats, and on Sunday he took a 10-time walk, an eight-lane race, killing an opposite field to the right, was hit by a pitch and darted another single right in the ninth to pull the yankees within 7-5. He hit ninth. Maybe he should flip-flop with the current leadoff hitter Gardner.
"We didn't live up to our potential on the offensive side of the ball, I included," Gardner said. "I hit the top of the lineup. It's my job to set the tone and get to the base and I haven't done well with these first few games."
Troy Tulowitzki struck Gardner and knocked out the tape to finish the game .
But the one who struck first or last should not have significance in a series of this talent difference. The Yankees were given a season-opening layup line and missed an opportunity to put the crazy tenor.
