Emergency situation declared due to outbreak of mouth in Rockland

This story has been updated.

As Rockland County continues to experience the "worst measles outbreak in the country" since the disease was eradicated in 2000, County Executive Ed Day has declared an emergency for all unvaccinated residents.

During the emergency, anyone under the age of 18 and unvaccinated against the measles will be blocked from public places until the statement expires in 30 days or until they have received the MMR vaccination, the day said.

The measure comes into effect at midnight on Tuesday, March 26, Day said.

Since the outbreak began in late September last year, there have been 1

53 confirmed cases of measles, Day said.

During the announcement, Day said that, according to state officials, only 72.9 percent of residents aged 1 to 18 were vaccinated against the measles in Rockland County. It includes the more than 16,900 people who have received the vaccine since the onset of the outbreak.

Today said the emergency was necessary because a "certain group of people" had revoked the county to be vaccinated. He said these people hang on health officials and slam doors in their faces.

They also visit public places as shopping centers, endangering thousands of others, especially small children and pregnant women.

"As this outbreak has continued, our inspectors have begun to face opposition from those they are trying to protect," Day said. "They've been hanged or told not to call again. They've been told" we're not discussing this, don't come back "when they visit the home of infected people as part of their investigations. This type of answer is unacceptable and irresponsible. It jeopardizes the health and well-being of others and shows a shocking lack of responsibility and concern for others in our society. "

Law enforcement will not patrol or ask for vaccination cards, but those found in conflict will be referred to the Rockland County District Attorney's Office, he added.

There is a law enforcement component in the statement that includes a misdemeanor charge and a $ 500 fine for parents of non-vaccinated children.

The outbreak began in late September 2018 when an international traveler arrived in Rockland County with a suspicion of measles, said the Rocklands County Health Department.

Pr. Protocol was notified to the health department and immediately activated its Communicable Disease Team to investigate. Since then, the number of cases has continued to increase despite measures such as Restricting unvaccinated students from attending schools and asking them not to visit public and shopping areas until at least 30 days after they are healed.

Most of the cases are currently clustered in eastern Ramapo, including New Square, Spring Valley, Monsey, but due to Rockland County's small geographic size, exposure to the measles can occur anywhere in the county.

Last week, officials announced five places where a person with measles visited to warn residents.

They included:

  • Target at Spring Valley Marketplace, 50 Spring Valley Market Place, between Sunday, March 10 at 8 am and Monday March 11 at. 1 and between Monday 11 March at 8 and Tuesday 12 March, at. 2 (The Health Department has not been able to narrow down the time for possible exposure at Target in Spring Valley Marketplace, despite several attempts to reach the infected individual).
  • All Fresh Supermarket, 19 Route 59, Monsey, Tuesday March 12, between 6am and 6pm. 13:30 and 4:30
  • Atrium Plaza, 401 Route 59, Monsey, Tuesday March 12, between 6:00 pm. 2.30 – kl. 5:45
  • Designer's Spot, 401 Route 59, Monsey, Tuesday March 12, between 6:00 pm. 2.30 and 5:45 pm
  • TOR Bus Loop 2 Eastbound, which traveled Tuesday, March 12, between 9 am and 6 pm. 15:55 and 6:06 pm from Atrium Plaza in Monsey.
  • International taxi that drove from near 5 Twin Ave. in the Spring Valley to close to the intersection of Sunrise Drive and Monsey Boulevard in Monsey on Wednesday, March 13, between 6 pm 15:15 and 5:30 pm

The best way to protect yourself and the community is to stay abreast of your measles vaccination. High community vaccination rates help protect people who cannot be vaccinated because they are too young or have specific health conditions, health professionals said.

The Rockland County Department of Health organizes a free MMR vaccination clinic from 9 am 1-3, Wednesday 27 March on the 2nd floor of building A, Robert L. Yeager Health Complex, 50 Sanatorium Road, Pomona.
