Edwin Diaz gets it right for Mets after four-out letdown

Edwin Diaz's first blown save with his new team didn't sit well. He was hoping for a chance right away to make it up for it.

Field on Sunday afternoon for his 13th save. “I think today gave me more confidence than I already had. That's what I do – I go out there and lock the game down. ”

This 32-pitch outing was far from easy. Diaz walked out of Stewart on four pitches to start the inning and allowed one-out single to Brandon Dixon, giving the Tiger runners at the corners with one out. A strikeout was desperately needed, and Diaz acted accordingly.

He found John Hicks after a nine-pitch at bat, blowing a 2-2, 97 mph fastball matched him. Up came JaCoby Jones, who was enjoying a career weekend against the Mets. Friday night, he drove in four runs, and in the three games the young outfielder had six hits. Diaz got ahead in the count 1

-2, before Jones fouled off four straight pitches.

With the count full, though, the Mets closer nailed the outside corner with another 97 mph fastball. Jones argued the call when Diaz thumped his chest three times and was greeted by his happy teammates.

“I was excited. I know this was a [big] series for us to win, ”said Diaz, who has pitched to a 1.71 ERA with 34 strikeouts in 21 innings pitched in his first season in Queens. “They played us hard. I wanted to lock the game down for us. ”

Diaz, acquired in the off-season in the Robinson Cano trade, remained his first save Saturday, though the Mets rallied for a 13-in, 5-4 victory. He was called upon in the eighth inning for the first time this year with the tying run on third base and two outs. But Jones flipped a single to right to pull the Tigers. Diaz played with fire Sunday, but did not get burned.

"The four-pitch walk made it look worse than it really was," said Mickey Callaway. "I think after the four-pitch walk, he threw the ball well."

Diaz has worked a lot this year, already having thrown 21 innings. He has appeared in six of the last nine games. But after appearing in 73 games and throwing 73 / innings last year, Diaz isn't concerned.

"I found a way to prepare myself for that type of circumstance," he said.
