Disney has a new Jungle Cruise look at its theme parks ̵
1; this after capturing flakes for what some said were racist depictions – and they struck off with all the insulting robots.
Honchos at Disney this week unveiled an update on their Jungle Cruise rides at both Disneyland and Disney World … which over the past year were changed and changed after a ton of people demanded that they lose the so-called “natives “along the OG path.
Mouse House released a BTS video showing the process of what went into the reworking of the trip – and the engineers repeated what Disney said in a statement … namely that they would remain faithful to what everyone loves and remembers about Jungle Cruise travel from the past, while also being inclusive / respectful / accurate in terms of depicting cultures.
What it apparently amounted to in the final product – based on video they sent of the updated Jungle Cruise tour – is not traces of the original people who used to be seen along the way.
Most of these indigenous people were portrayed as blacks – but they were also made to look like what some have characterized as “wild” … something that has been done over and over again since the 20th century. Dr. Seuss even used to portray indigenous people in the same way … always drawing them with super dark skin and exaggerated features.
It seems that none of these depictions still exist in the new tour – but there are still black people highlighted. Only now are they seen as part of the reconnaissance squad … as opposed to being considered the scary, cannibal-villainous guys who threaten the cruise passengers.
The call to modernize Jungle Cruise came on the heels of Disney announcing that they were also giving their Splash Mountain rides a facelift … with the OG animatronics also called racist and persistently deep southern tropes. They took care of it, and now … this too.
Next – Peter Pan and theirs Native American robots. Just kidding … maybe.
