Dicks Sporting Goods Park vaccination site closes after patients experience side effects on vaccine

Sent: Up to date:

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (KDVR) – The mass vaccination site at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City closed early Wednesday afternoon after people began having side effects on the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine.

Centura Health said 0.8% of the patients – or 13 people out of the estimated 1,700 – who received the vaccine on Wednesday had side effects.

The vaccination site, which was scheduled to close at. 1

7, closed around noon. 15.30 and sent home 640 people who had been waiting in line for hours for the vaccine. Their vaccination openings have been rescheduled for Sunday when they will receive the Pfizer vaccine.

There is still no information on how many people had reactions, or how severe these reactions were.

In response to a FOX31 survey, a Centura Health representative issued the following statement:

As of today, April 7, we have decided to stop operating Vaccines for everyone mass vaccination event at Dicks Sporting Goods Park, which we host in partnership with the state of Colorado. After the administration of the J&J vaccine and during on-site observation, we saw a limited number of side effects on the vaccine, corresponding to 0.8 percent of those who received the vaccine on Wednesday. We followed our protocols and in an abundance of caution we decided – in partnership with the state – to suspend operations for the rest of the day. Over 1,700 patients received their shots today, and the 640 patients who were unable to receive their vaccine this afternoon will be automatically rescheduled for Sunday, April 11 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. Our goal is to continue to vaccinate Coloradans as quickly as possible while keeping our patient’s safety at the forefront.

This is a story that is evolving. Details will be reported when received.
