A first watch trailer for Universal Pictures and Makeready's Queen and Slim fell during the BET Awards and Bonnie and Clyde -sque feature teased the visual crime drama with starring Get Out 's Daniel Kaluuya and Jodie Turner-Smith written by Lena Waithe and directed by Melina Matsoukas.
Known for his work with Beyonce's Formation Matsoukas serves with his direct debut feeling and social awareness with the first glance at Queen and Slim a story about a couple (Kaluuya and Turner-Smith) on their first date. After being confronted with a minor traffic crash, the situation escalates, ending with a tragic outcome after the man kills the police officer in self-defense. Frightened and in fear of their lives, man, a retail worker and the woman, a criminal defense lawyer, have to flee. But the incident is recorded on video and becomes viral, and the couple unconditionally becomes a symbol of trauma, terror, grief and pain for people across the country.
The couple are unlikely to be refugees, and while on the run, their journey develops into gloomy and desperate circumstances. At the same time, they create a deep and strong love that will reveal their common humanity and shape the rest of their lives.
Waithe produces the film through her firm Hillman Grad Productions together with Matsoukas via her production company De La Revolución Films. Frey produces through his production company, 3BlackDot, along with Andrew Coles and Michelle Knudsen as well as Makeready's Brad Weston and Pam Abdy.
