The Dalai Lama went back to his jokes made last week in an interview that a future female successor should be "more attractive."
In a statement released Tuesday, his office said "His Holiness really meant no offense" and that he is "deeply sorry that people have been harmed by what he said and give his sincere apologies."
"It sometimes seems beyond the cuff remarks that can be entertaining in a cultural context, losing their humor in translation when brought into another," the office continued in the statement.
The 83-year-old Buddhist monk was accused of sexism after a BBC interview in 2015 after announcing that his future successor may be a woman but must be "very attractive" or she would be "not much use."

The Dalai Lama doubled on these remarks last week, When BBC reporter Rajini Vaidyanathan asked if he understood how these comments could have angry women.
He also added that if she wasn't attractive, "I think people prefer not to see her … that face."
"Much of the women say it's objectifying women, it's about who you are on the inside, Vaidyanathan said.
The Dalai Lama replied," Yes, I believe both. "
