ONEs President Trumps MAGA hordes overtook the US Capitol last Wednesday, photos began to appear on social media of a familiar face in the rebel crowd: Daily show correspondent Jordan Klepper. When I immediately reached out to him to see what kind of field piece he had in store for the viewers, the comedian simply replied, “A wild one.”
The segment that has only been released online since The Daily Show is still on hiatus this week, is actually even more outrageous than the last one that Klepper filmed at the so-called “Million MAGA March” just two weeks after the election last November. He not only came close enough to watch the mob break into the building, but also got into an instant melee with a Trump supporter tackling his cameraman.
“Last week we saw one of the darkest days in American history,”
Things got more and more aggressive as Klepper followed the crowd toward the Capitol. “The only thing you could not help but notice is how many people seemed to be preparing for battle,” he notes. “From the tactical vests to the pitchforks, this rally felt charged.”
“You can tell these people really love America for the number of weapons they brought to harm other Americans,” Klepper said. “This thing was a powder container. All that was required was someone to turn on the fuse, like these human fans, ”he adds, pointing to clips by Rudy Giuliani, Donald Trump Jr. and the president himself, who practically orders their supporters to commit treason.
“Is this the last stand ?!” he asks a man running towards the building on a Segway scooter.
Klepper’s previous reports from Trump rallies over the past year have been consistently funny, but you can feel the jokes melt away as he absorbs the seriousness of what’s going to happen. Over footage of the violent clashes that followed, he says: “They attacked our democracy, our police and even our cameraman.”
“Trump’s fake tough guy military is literally throwing himself on the ground to sustain victims,” he says, noting that “in the end, the crowd did not stop our democracy” when Congress finalized the certification of the Electoral College vote later that evening.
“This shitstain uprising failed,” Klepper concludes. “Like my dry January.”
