Cuba legalizes private Wi-Fi – The Boston Globe

HAVANA (AP) – Cuba legalizes private Wi-Fi networks and imports of equipment as routers, eliminating one of the world's tightest restrictions on internet usage.

The measure published by state media on Wednesday provides a legal status to thousands of Cubans who created homemade digital smuggled networks that were illegal but generally tolerated by the authorities in recent years. It also seems to allow private companies to deliver the Internet to their customers, the potential launch in Cuba of Internet cafes that are almost unknown here.

While the new regulation allows citizens to connect to the Internet with their own equipment and share the signal with others, it does not solve the state control of the Internet itself. Cuba's telecoms, Etecsa, remains the only ISP on the island.
