Critical role reveals new Paladin subclass for dungeons and dragons



Last week’s episode of Critical role unveiled a brand new paladin subclass designed by Matt Mercer – The Oath of the Open Sea. The underclass was designed with Travis Willingham’s character Fjord in mind and contains a nautical theme that is synchronized with Fjord’s past as a sailor. Fjord gained access to his underclass ability as he took his third paladin level, though he did not formally take the oath of the open sea until the latest episode. As an oath of Open Sea Paladin, Fjord gets access to two new spells – create or destroy water and rapid retreat. Fjord can also channel divinity for two new effects, one that creates a 20-foot fog that obscures the area a lot for everyone except Paladin and his allies (who treat the fog as slightly obscured) and an ability that allows Paladin to take advantage of the tide. force to push an enemy ten meters away from you when you hit them with an attack.

Mercer revealed that the new paladin subclass is also available on D&D Beyond for free, which means we can see some of the other abilities in the subclass. After reaching level 7, the paladin oath of the Open Seas creates a 1

0-foot aura that prevents itself and others from being fought or detained. At level 15, the paladin can use their reaction to cause water to collide into anyone trying to get in or out of their melee area, causing them to fall prone if they fail a power-saving throw. Finally, at level 20, the paladin can channel the spirits of a Mythic Swashbuckler and give them several powerful naval abilities in a full minute.
