DOVER, De. – COVID-19 cases are increasing in the first state, where the state’s positivity rate has increased 1.2% in just one week.
The Delaware Division of Public Health (DPH) reports admissions and deaths are also rising. DPH officials say it takes time to track factors such as when and how someone got the virus, but with a new testing strategy underway, DPH hopes more people will be tested to stop the spread.
“We note that many of the cases we see are related to social gatherings,” said Dr. Rick Hong, Medical Director. He encourages people to take advantage of the state’s multiple testing opportunities if they may have been exposed to or spent time in large groups.
“Having multiple fixed sites with a schedule will allow people to plan ahead when they will be tested, but there is also a need for community testing or mobile testing depending on what we see out there,”
Delaware is moving toward a fixed test model, so that means 8 Walgreens around the state as well as 5 state service centers and six public health clinics will all offer tests five to seven days out of the week.
According to the state, tea isSt. the results return between 48 and 72 hours from the initial test. At Walgreens locations around the state, you do not need an appointment for a test. Just drive up and wait in line for your turn.
Delaware’s Emergency Management Agency is assisting DPH in facilitating these new test sites. Jeff Sands, Community Relations Coordinator for DEMA, says access to testing can be the difference when it comes to stopping the spread.
“The goal is to be able to be the most efficient use of resources for the state,” Sands explained. “We want it to be accessible to those who need it most, the high-risk populations and the people who also work in high-risk industries just to make sure they stay safe and also keep their loved ones safe.”
Only time will tell whether the new approach is effective, but Dr. Hong also warns that people should not ignore the flu season this year with such a strong focus on COVID-19. The state also offers flu shot clinics. Click here for information on where you can be tested for COVID-19. Click here for information on flu shot clinics.
