Coronavirus infections are rising in the Bay Area following national trend

Coronavirus infections increased in the Bay Area in the week ending Friday, with the average number of daily new cases at 475, up 8.7% from the previous week ending March 26th.

The data could indicate that California is beginning to decline in line with the rest of the United States, where coronavirus infections have steadily plateaued or increased due to more infectious variants.

“On the west coast, we see a leveling,” which is not a bad thing, said Dr. George Rutherford, an infectious disease expert at UCSF. “It simply came to our notice then. We can hit the bottom and jump up a bit. ”

This is the fourth straight week with rising cases nationwide, according to Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the American Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“We know that these increases are in part due to more transferable variants, which we monitor very closely,” Walensky said at a White House news briefing on Monday.

She said young people are driving the recent rise in infections as the rising vaccination rate among older Americans is preventing the most serious cases among this group.
