SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – A demonstration of free speech organized by conservative activists quickly fell apart in downtown San Francisco on Saturday after hundreds of protesters rose in the area and surpassed the total, including knocking one in the mouth.
A photographer working for The Associated Press witnessed an activist with Team Save America being taken away in an ambulance and a wounded San Francisco police officer on the ground at San Francisco’s United Nations Plaza.
Team Save America organized the meeting to protest Twitter, as it said gossip conservative speech.
Members of the group wore red Trump Make-up hats “Make America Great Again”
Philip Anderson, the organizer of the event, posted photos on social media of his bloody mouth with a missing front tooth and another hanging loose. He said anti-fascist protesters attacked him “for no reason.”
Anderson took the stage around 1pm and was greeted by singing and plastic bottles and glass bottles thrown over police barricades.
The event was canceled, although both sides lingered in the area until the afternoon.
Messages left with San Francisco police were not immediately returned Saturday.
Anderson called counter-protesters hypocrites and said they are the reason he is voting for President Donald Trump.
“I love America, I love this country, and I love free speech,” he said.
