Connecticut health officials are warning of carnivorous bacteria in Long Island Sound after five people became infected within two months.
Garden City Dermatologist Dr. Theodore Daly says the infection can be fatal and can come in through open wounds from recent surgeries or fresh tattoos.
He says it is accompanied by fever, redness and swelling and pain.
The only remedy is surgery and antibiotics. He says it is worrying, given that there have been seven cases in 1
Adrienne Esposito, from Citizens Campaign for the Environment, says the bacteria had come northeast due to climate change.
She says that as the waters begin to cool down, things may be in decline.
The CDC warns anyone with open wounds, including those from recent surgery, piercings or tattoos, to stay out of Long Island Sound.
