Confirmed: PS5 is the largest gaming console in modern history

When Internet detectives revealed that the PlayStation 5 was going to be huge, we were very amused – but even their smart Photoshops could not fully prepare us for how huge the PS5 really is.

About half an hour after Sony finally unveiled the next-generation console price and release date ($ 399 or $ 499, on November 12), the company released a complete specification sheet that includes the dimensions of the console. And it’s a monster.

Quickly, what’s the biggest console ever made? Did you say the original 2001 Xbox or the original Xbox One in VCR size? Maybe 60GB PS3, affectionately called “Phat”

Wrong. PS5 is bigger than all of them.

According to Sony, the PS5 is approx. 390 mm (15.4 inches) tall, 260 mm (10.24 inches) deep, and 104 mm (4.09 inches) wide, making it the largest single console you’ve probably ever heard of. The model without the disk drive? Same story, only 12 millimeters slimmer.

I connected the numbers to CompareSizes.com to see how it stacks up to consoles that we have previously ridiculed for being absolute rocks:

From left to right: PS3 60GB, Xbox, Xbox One, PS5 Digital Edition, PS5
Visualization: CompareSizes

There is hardly a comparison. The PS5 is so much bigger that you can not even argue that the 3D perspective throws its actual size. I’m pretty sure you’ll have to go back to days of gaming machines with built-in CRT TVs or computers like the Commodore 64 to get much bigger.

And boy oh boy is this box bigger than the new Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S:

Note that the 3D tool does not straighten the back of each console. PS5 is so much deeper than both Xbox.

I do not even have to tell you which console is which. It is clearly obvious. Do you remember when we were worried about whether the new Xbox would fit in our entertainment centers?

Oh, and there’s a little treat I forgot to mention, which makes this even better: Sony does not include the PS5’s “largest projection” or optional base in these measurements, according to the press release.

Do you see the yellow and blue boxes? Now imagine some fins sticking out of the top of them.

Here is a 3D visualization of all seven consoles whose dimensions I connected if you want to rotate them around yourself. And in case you were wondering, the PS5 also weighs 4.5 kg or about 10 pounds. If you drop the disk drive, you bring yourself down to 3.9 kg.

Remember, I loved my 60GB PS3 despite its perimeter, and I doubt I will feel any different about the PS5. The rest of the spec sheet is pretty impressive too!

I’ll leave it below so you can review.
