Clark County Public Health confirms 16 measles cases, five suspected cases

Hundreds of students are out of school in the face of a Clark County measles outbreak, and thousands of other people may still be exposed to the highly contagious virus.

On Thursday, Clark County Public Health announced 16 children have been diagnosed with confirmed cases of measles. Another five cases are suspected. Of the confirmed cases, 14 of the children have not been immunized against the virus and the other two vaccine status was not verified.

Of the confirmed cases, 13 children aged 1 and 10 and three are between 11 and 18 years. One child was hospitalized.

Clark County Public Health also identified additional sites and times when people may have been exposed to measles. They are:

There are now two dozen places in Clark County and Portland, including schools, health facilities, and businesses where people may have been exposed to the virus.

Clark County Public Health requires the exclusion of students and employees without documented immunity to measles from the seven schools identified as places of exposure. According to data from the Washington State Department of Health, 291 of the 3,217 students at the seven schools were exempted from receiving measles, coastal and rubella vaccines during the 2017-2018 school year.
