The first Bluetooth tracker to work with Apple’s large Find My Bluetooth network of iPhones, iPads and Macs is here. But it’s not Apple’s long-awaited AirTags tracker; it’s Chipolo One Spot, an updated version of the company’s One tracker, designed to work exclusively with Apple’s network.
Chipolo calls One Spot a “special edition” product. While it has the same 12-month battery life (with replaceable battery), 120 dB ring, water resistance and overall design like the regular One tracker, One Spot only works with Apple̵
This is potentially an upgrade for anyone already using Apple products, given that a Bluetooth tracking brand is only as effective as the number of users on the same network. And while Chipolo has been around for a while, it’s still far smaller compared to more established players like Tile or hundreds of millions of Apple devices around the world.
One Spot also has some Find My specific features, such as a “Lost Mode”, which allows users to tag an item as missing – which in turn will notify other Find My users if it is found with a short message and a phone number to help you get your stuff back.
It’s a kind of confusing product given the context of Apple’s rumored AirTags tracker, which will potentially be released later in 2021, and it would also be a Find My exclusive Bluetooth brand to keep track of lost or missing items. Chipolo’s tracker lacks the notorious Ultra-WideBand radio support that Apple’s tag is said to have for more accurate tracking, but that aside, it’s hard to imagine what else Apple’s tag will bring to the table that is not already available on One. Spot.
Pre-orders for the Chipolo One Spot start in May with shipping scheduled for early June. No price has been announced yet.
