CD Project co-founder apologizes for launching buggy games

LONDON – The developers of Cyberpunk 2077 are pushing the release of new content for the game to focus on fixing bugs and crashes.

Polish game developer and publisher CD Projekt launched the long-awaited sci-fi epic last month. It has been the target of harsh criticism for releasing what many fans and critics saw as an unfinished game.

7;s most hyped big budget video games. But it was plagued by a host of glitches and declines in performance on older consoles like Sony’s PlayStation 4 and Microsoft’s Xbox One.

CD Project tried to place fans with the promise of reimbursement and improvements to the game. But that did not stop Sony from removing Cyberpunk from its digital PlayStation Store, a move that many industry analysts said was unprecedented for a triple A title.

Marcin Iwiński, co-founder of CD Projekt, apologized in a video posted to the game’s YouTube channel on Wednesday.

“Despite good reviews on PC, the console version of Cyberpunk 2077 did not meet the quality standard we wanted it to meet,” Iwiński said. “I and the entire management team are deeply saddened by this, and I own this video publicly.”

“Do not blame any of our teams for what happened,” he added. “They are all incredibly talented and hardworking.

“Me and the board are the final decision makers and that was our call to release the game. Although we believe me, we never ever thought that something similar would happen.”

Iwiński explained that much of the game’s problems with older hardware were due to its great ambitions on PC. Cyberpunk is “enormous in scope,” he said, packing a “diversity of custom objects, interacting systems and mechanics” in “a big city and in a relatively stress-free environment.”

“We made it even harder for ourselves by wanting to make the game look epic on PCs and then adapt it to consoles, especially old cameras” like the PS4 and Xbox One, “he added.

Iwiński said CD Project’s planned release of free downloadable content or DLC to accompany the main game would be delayed as developers struggle to patch the many bugs and crashes that gamers have experienced.

“We first decided to focus on the most important fixes and updates, and we’ll release the DLCs afterwards,” said CD Project co-founder.

He added that versions of the game for Sony and Microsoft’s next-generation consoles will be released in the latter half of the year. Players are currently only able to play the PS4 and Xbox One versions of Cyberpunk on the new PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X systems.

CD Project shares rose 2% Thursday morning. The game producer’s share price has fallen by approx. 38% since Cyberpunk was released on December 10th.

“We are taking this whole situation very seriously and working hard to do it right,” Iwiński said on Wednesday. “The guiding principles of our company are still the core of what we do, we still want to make great games and have an open communication with you our players.”

In addition to the controversy over Cyberpunk’s widespread launch, CD Project has also faced accusations of “crunch culture”, a common problem in the gaming industry that sees developers work long hours to finish a game on time. Cyberpunk was delayed three times before release.

“The team is working to bring relevant fixes to the game without any mandatory overtime,” CD Project Red adds red here? said in a news update on Wednesday. “Avoiding crunch on all of our future projects is one of our top priorities.”
