Washington Capitals submit TJ Oshie is very unlikely to play again this postseason, according to several people familiar with the situation. The team has said that Oshie is "indefinitely" with an unreleased "upper body" injury after being pushed into the boards of Carolina Hurricanes forward Warren Foegele in the third period of Thursday's game 4. The first round series between the teams are tied to two game pieces.
Oshie had on a sling after the game, according to someone who saw him, and when he left the ice, he was poured over, he seemed to favor his right arm and shoulder. Foegele received a two-minute minor penalty for boarding, and the NHL Department of Player Safety did not consider the hit worth supplementing the discipline. Captain Captain Alex Ovechkin said after the game that it was "a dirty game."
Oshie scored 25 goals with 29 assists in 69 games, and 11 of the games he missed were for concussion. He has been in Washington for a top six in all four years, Oshie skating an average of 18:37 per game this season, a penalty shooter in addition to playing on the Capital's top power play unit. He scored eight goals with 13 assistants in the team's Stanley Cup race last season.
Washington is already without top four defense Michal Kempny, who tore hamstring late in the regular season and has been excluded for the playoffs. With Oshie sidelined for Saturday night's Game 5, forward-looking Tom Wilson will play on the top line with Ovechkin and center Nicklas Backstrom. Carl Hagelin was promoted to second line on the right side of the center Evgeny Kuznetsov and left Jakub Vrana. The Capitals were deeply reminiscent of Devante Smith-Pelly from the American Hockey League on Friday; he starred last postseason with seven goals, and he comes on fourth line for game 5.
"I'm not sure there is another player who wants to play a game anymore, TJ Oshie on our team, said coach Todd Reirden on Saturday. "That he is not with us will be a hard void to fill, but hopefully just push people to get to another level and get their backs to say."
