The Republican U.S. Rep. Mike Garcia declared victory Friday in a narrow race in Southern California with thousands of ballots left to count.
If Garcia’s 400-vote leadership holds, the state’s 25th congressional district will be the third housing district in California that Republicans were able to return to after the 2018 blue wave, according to FOX 11 Los Angeles reporter Bill Melugin.
The seat, a former Republican stronghold spanning parts of the Los Angeles and Ventura counties, was flipped blue by Democrat Katie Hill in 2018 – but she eventually withdrew from Congress last year due to a nude photo scandal.
The state’s 21st district probably also seems to turn Republicans, which would give the GOP four more seats in the state.

“After a long, hard fight, I am proud to serve the privilege of serving CA-25 for another two years,” Garcia said Friday night in a statement according to the Los Angeles Daily News. “With only a few remaining ballots to be counted, victory is clear.”

Garcia extended his lead slightly since last Friday – when he led by about 150 votes – to about 400 votes from 6 p.m. 21 PT Friday.
Garcia’s Democratic opponent, Assemblywoman Christy Smith, has also at times led the race back and forth. The results are approx. 87% in, according to The Associated Press. She has not admitted.
In California, postal votes that are postmarked on Election Day can arrive as late as Friday and are still counted.
Smith, meanwhile, called Garcia’s victory celebration “dangerous to the democratic process.”
“With a margin of only 400 votes and thousands of outstanding ballots, election staff work diligently to process ballots and count exactly all outstanding votes to ensure our community is heard, and this race remains too close to being convened,” Smith said. in a statement according to the Daily News.
Garcia already beat Smith once in a special election in May.
Smith wrote “Patience is a Virtue” on his Twitter feed Friday night.
