Breath of the Wild players are speeding to bake bread

Beating The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild as quickly as possible? Boring – we’ve seen that speed before. Today, Speedy Gonzaleses competes inside BOTW try more obscure and strange rides, like the one where you see how fast you can go home and die, or the one where you drive to a wedding. But the hottest speedrun of late has to be bread%, a silly category that has seen a handful of new contributions to its leaderboard in mid-January.

The goal is simple: get the ingredients to make a loaf of bread and cook them. As is usual in any type BOTW Speedrun, performing this feat involves cutting through parts of the map using the whistle mechanic to move faster and of course a shirtless Link. The current highscore clocks at 1

9: 44: 700, a time held by speedrunner Xeryph. In the video above, you can see Link Shield surfing over frosty plains to gather the strength needed to leave the original Great Plateau area. There are plenty of “bullet time bounces” that Link uses to get massive air via Bokoblins along with the trick of pulling weapons out while falling to dampen damage.

From there, Link catapults himself to another part of the map near Tabantha Frontier, where he immediately begins to cut grass. The goal is to find wheat that falls randomly – apparently, this part of the witty speedrun can be improved, as Xeryph notes in the YouTube description that the wheat’s RNG is “bad”.

It’s unclear if this speedrun category will have legs in the long run, but so far I just appreciate that we put more emphasis on the underrated cooking parts of Breath of the Wild. Xeryph also holds top records for the rake in the lake category and is number one in the world to quickly kill Link.
