Bond’s Goldeneye telescope on the verge of collapse | World



A radio telescope in the jungle of Puerto Rico, which has played an important role in space research for more than 50 years and presented in a James Bond film, is in danger of collapsing.

Engineers are investigating how to rescue the Arecibo Observatory after two supporting cables failed.

Michael Nolan, a former installation instructor, told national geography that the chances of the observatory being repaired were “probably 50-50”. It is the second largest telescope of its kind in the world and is still used by scientists.

The two cables that failed supported a 900-ton equipment platform suspended 150 meters above the bowl. A dirt was torn in the bowl as it crashed to the ground. The fear is that if one
