Black Widow scene after credits, explained

Natasha and Yelena’s sister bands resonate beyond the events of Black Widow.

Black widow sent Natasha Romanoff on her long-awaited solo mission, then Marvel Cinematic Universe movies and its delicious post-credits scene hit theaters and Disney Plus Premier Access on Friday. Manager Cate Shortland‘s movie sees superspy (Scarlett Johansson) resume her shady past.

Old Life includes co-spying agents Yelena Belova, Melina Vostokoff, and Alexei Shostakov (Florence Pugh, Rachel Weisz, and David Harbor), with whom she is reunited.

The main adventure – see our separate ending explains it – jumps back to the period just after Captain America: Civil War, but the stage after credits takes place at a more recent time in the timeline. Let’s look at some SPOILERS.

Revenge Mission

Sometime after Natasha gave her life to get Soul Stone and help counter Thanos’ bad plans Avengers: Endgame, Yelena takes her dog Fanny to visit her grave. This is presumably in Ohio (their common childhood home), and the grave appears to be under a cherry blossom tree, like the tree that Dreykov said Natasha’s biological mother was buried next to.

The words “Daughter, sister, the avenger” are inscribed in the tombstone.

Choice in Falcon and Winter Soldier

Waltz’s plan remains a mystery, but she seems to be putting together a team of extraordinary people with axes to paint.

This quiet moment is interrupted by Contessa Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), who blows her nose and says she is allergic to the Midwest. Val has Yelena’s next goal: Clint Barton, aka Hawkeye.

“Maybe you want a shot at the man responsible for your sister’s death,” Val says before handing her a tablet with Clint’s picture. “Kind of cute, don’t you think?”

The events of Avengers: Endgame return to haunt Hawkeye.

It looks like upcoming Disney Plus Hawkeye series just got his villain (or at least one of its villains). We do not know why Val wants Clint dead, but he could just be the first target in a plot to replace the Avengers with his own pawns.

Sometime between the events of Black Widow and the period after Avengers: Endgame, Yelena started working for Val — she complains that Val shows up during her “vacation time”. We’ve seen Val in before last thaw episodes of Disney Plus show The Falcon and the Winter Soldier as she recruited the fallen Captain America John Walker and gave him the name US Agent.

Election remains a big question mark. In the comics, Val worked for SHIELD, but was revealed to be a Russian sleeping agent. She also infiltrated Hydra into SHIELD and assumed Madame Hydra’s identity, but her true loyalty lay with the Russians (perhaps).

We do not yet know who MCU Val works for and what her plan is, but her comic book story offers plenty of options. She could help restore Hydra or work for a secret foreign group.

Given her recruitment of highly educated people who have had a hard time – Yelena spent years as a brainwashed killer and Walker lost the shield for publicly kills a guy – it’s possible Val is trying to create an MCU equivalent of the comics’ Thunderbolts or Dark Avengers. Both of these superteams consisted of villains without the world knowing it.

It’s likely that Yelena will only try to kill Clint during her series in a classic ‘hero fight due to misunderstanding, and then go along’ a comic scenario when he got into a fight with Natasha when he tried to die in her place – he and Yelena will probably end up mourning her loss together. The show (which also will introduce Hailee Steinfeld as Kate Bishop) is scheduled to hit Disney Plus at the end of 2021.
