A Twitter spokesman confirmed to The Hill that the technology giant is “actively preparing to support the transition to institutional Twitter accounts in the White House on January 20, 2021”, which also includes @whitehouse, @VP, @FLOTUS and a number of other official accounts. The process is carried out in consultation with the National Archives and Records Administration.

Twitter also confirmed that employees will meet with representatives from the Biden-Harris transition team in the coming months to review how the new administration plans to use its government-related accounts.

The @POTUS account has more than 32 million followers and will give Biden another way to communicate with the public while in office. The current tweets sent under the Trump administration are archived and the account is reset to zero tweets.

Trump has so far refused to admit the presidential race to Biden, though Biden was expected to be the winner with 306 election college votes and regardless gets the @POTUS account in about two months.

The president has relied far more on his own personal account, which has nearly 89 million supporters. His Twitter activity has come under increased control since the presidential election, as he uses the platform to post misleading and false information about voter fraud, much of which is marked as misinformation.

While Trump’s positions will be subject to tougher control by Twitter as he leaves office and loses the protection the platform provides to world leaders, he will continue to have a broad platform through his account to maintain his high perch in the country’s politics, a tool that can remain strong should he choose to run for another term in 2024.
