BUTLER BY, LUZERNE LAND (WBRE / WYOU) – A crash that involved a flatbed car that pulled a million honeybees is to blame for closing a stretch of Interstate 81 Friday night.
The bees were transported in crates around noon. 17.30 when the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed.
It sent hives spewing and buzzing in this area, forcing authorities to close a six-mile stretch of I-81 southbound from exit 151 B, Interstate 80 Westbound interchange and exit 145, West Hazleton exit.
An EMS chief called for a beekeeping nearby that he knew to pick up the bees.
Police directed traffic to Route 93 while the highway was closed.
No injuries were reported, but a firefighter received a bee sting on the lip.
