AUBURN, Maine (WMTW) – Maine State Police, assisted by the Alaska State Police, arrested and accused an Auburn man of a cold case in 1993.
Steven H. Downs, 44, Auburn , was taken into custody and was accused of murder and sexual assault by Sophie Sergie.
The crime unit conducted a follow-up study using genetic genealogy and stated that at the time of the murder, the Downs was 1
Further details showed that Downs lived in the residence where Sergie was found dead.
Officials worked with Maine authorities to bring the case to an end.
Spokesperson with the Maine State Police, Steve McCausland said, "I know we have had several of these cases that have been resolved and worked, and then you get a break in the matter and all things come together."
Downs are currently being held at Androscoggin County Prison. Downs will be handed over to Alaska for face charges.
He appears in court for a extradition hearing on Tuesday.
