Apple Watch is ubiquitous among iPhone owners: it’s the go-to for iOS devices. Android, on the other hand, does not have such a unique, easy-to-recommend smartwatch – we have all sorts of options from many different manufacturers. Here’s a quick guide to some of your best options across categories.
Wear OS is a kind of de facto portable platform for Android phones. Formerly known as Android Wear, the operating system is made by Google, which means that watches running it have access to a relatively healthy selection of third-party apps through the Play Store as well as Google Assistant. It is known to go long distances without any meaningful development, and the clocks that run it are all quite similar. But they are not identical! Here are a few of your best options.
Mobvoi TicWatch Pro 3
Mobvoi TicWatch Pro 3 is currently the high water mark as far as Wear OS devices reach. It has Qualcomm’s Wear 4100 chip and a full gigabyte of RAM, which means it has the best performance you can currently find in any Wear OS watch. It also has excellent battery life thanks to the dual screen design: When the LED screen is off, a low-power LCD takes over to display the time. It does not have a rotating crown to navigate the menus, as many smartwatches do, but it is a good admission to get a Wear OS watch that is almost never frustrating. However, you pay a lot for the privilege: TicWatch Pro 3 starts at $ 300. See our full review for more.

Skagen Falster 3
The Skagen Falster 3 still shakes the older Wear 3100 chipset, but unlike many Wear OS devices, it has the full gigabyte of RAM Google’s portable platform should work without many hiccups. It’s more than a year old now, but when it’s released, our review called it “one of the best options available” in the Wear OS space. That’s still true today, and it’s significantly less pricey than the above Mobvoi – you can find one for $ 200 or less quite often lately.

Fitbit is one of the more stocked players in the portable space that has released its first device all the way back in 2009. Google entered into an agreement to buy Fitbit in 2019 and started selling Fitbit products through its own storefront this year. The acquisition still faces legal hurdles, and so far, Fitbit devices have not changed much in terms of how they were before the company became part of Google.
Sense is Fitbit’s best smartwatch. It tracks all kinds of health measurements: steps, sleep, heart rate, oxygen saturation in the blood and even stress (supposedly). It can even take ECG scans. It has a very nice stainless steel case, its battery can last up to a week with a single charge (if you still do not use the always displayed screen), and it has Google Assistant and Alexa integration. In our review, we beat it for its high price: its MSRP is a whopping $ 330. However, it is often available for less longer, and if you can find it for $ 250 or so, you get a very reasonable deal.

Fitbit Versa 3
Fitbit Versa 3 is very similar to Fitbit Sense: same shape, same screen, same battery life. The only differences are that the Versa 3 cannot take ECG scans or stress readings, and the case is made of aluminum instead of steel. If these things do not matter to you, you can save a significant portion of the change with the smaller watch – the Versa 3 sells for $ 230 and can often be found for less. Fitbit Charge 4
Charge 4 is a simpler tracker from Fitbit. It monitors most of the same things as both Sense and Versa 3 – step, heart rate, sleep, SpO2 – but unlike these smartwatches, Charge 4 lacks voice assistant access. However, it is smaller and cheaper at an MSRP of $ 150 (and a street price that is often lower). In our review, Manuel called it “a reliable, fully-featured fitness tracker that also offers some advanced smartwatch features like solid notification management and NFC payments.”

Samsung makes some excellent smartwatches and fitness trackers that are compatible not only with the company’s own phones, but any Android device. Compared to Wear OS, the user experience on Samsung’s Tizen-based devices is generally smoother – but Galaxy wearables lack access to the Play Store and Google Assistant. Still, if these are not features you expect from a smartwatch, these are a good way to go.
Samsung’s Galaxy Watch3 is currently the best laptop. In our review, Corbin praised the Watch3’s hardware design and software finesse: in addition to a touch screen, the watch has a rotating frame used for navigation, which is both fun and intuitive. Its MSRP starts at an astronomical $ 400, but you can get one for as low as $ 250 recently.

Galaxy Watch Active2
Watch Active2 shares most of the benefits of the Watch3 with the exception of its more refined design (Active2 is, if you could not guess, positioned as a sporty device) and rotating frame. However, giving up these pleasures saves you a lot of money. Active2’s MSRP starts at $ 270, and you can find them closer to $ 200 more often than not. For more, read our full review here.

Being a fitness band, the Galaxy Fit2 is smaller and simpler than one of the above smartwatches – but it still delivers notifications and tracks fitness measurements like steps and sleep. It is cheap, with an MSRP of $ 60 and a street price that is often even lower.

But wait, there’s more! Some wearables run custom software that we did not touch on above. These devices are sometimes more niche and often cheaper than options like Wear OS watches and Fitbits. Here are a few of our favorites.
Skagen Jorn Hybrid HR
The Jorn Hybrid HR is a traditional analog watch with a low-power e-ink screen under its hands. The result is a simpler, less customizable smartwatch that still delivers notifications and tracks fitness measurements, but with battery life measured in weeks, not hours. Our reivew called it “a great non-smartwatch”, perfect for people who want a smart-ish experience without much hassle. It’s a beautiful sucker to start. You can get one for around $ 200.

Xiaomi Mi Band 5
Xiaomi’s Mi Band 5 is dirt cheap – it’s not uncommon to see it for sale below $ 30. In our review, Manuel noted that while it “lacks detailed automatic training tracking options, mobile payment options, voice commands, and built-in GPS,” it “is good enough to give you a broad overview of how you feel on a given day or during your workout. “If you want to dip your toe in the portable water for the least possible investment, you will not do much better than this.
